Our story
Built because nothing else got multiple monitors right.
I needed to work on Windows machines from my Mac, every day, and I needed it to be reliable. Not a quick session now and then: a remote desktop I could spread across my monitors and forget about, the same way I use my Mac.
So I went looking. I tried one remote desktop app after another. Each of them could connect, but every one fell short in the place that mattered most to me: multiple monitors. I couldn't pick which screens a session should use, text came out tiny on one display and blurry on another, and getting a setup that felt right took far more effort than it should.
After running out of options, I decided to build what I was missing. That became Sheltie: a native Mac app on top of FreeRDP, the open-source RDP engine, with multi-monitor support at its heart.
What I set out to fix
- Your displays, your choice. Use one screen, all of them, or exactly the ones you pick, and tell Windows which one is primary.
- Sharp text everywhere. Scaling for each display, so a Retina screen and an ordinary external monitor both look right.
- A real Mac app. Native dialogs, the Keychain, keyboard shortcuts, light and dark mode, VoiceOver.
- The little things that add up. Wake-on-LAN, reliable reconnects and a tidy library of connections.
Where it goes from here
Sheltie is in beta now, and it already handles my own setup every day. Every bug report and idea from people with their own multi-monitor setups helps it get better, so if something doesn't work the way you expect, I'd love to hear about it at support@sheltie.app.
